The Awakening of Jim Bishop

Literature & Fiction

Change. A second chance. A fresh start. Some, like Jim Bishop a retiree whose wife has just died, have it thrust upon them. Kerry Noland, CEO of a successful communications company, runs from it, trying to protect her domain and succeed in ways her alcoholic father never could. Family members make nurse Angela Griffen and Rev. Allen Rhodes consider new beginnings. Computer engineer Todd Sanders and homeless, pregnant woman Sheryl Williams yearn for it.
Their dance with new opportunities begins on a rainy night when Kerry runs over a bicyclist, but Todd takes the blame. Angela, tired from a hard day in the hospital drives past the accident and Allen stops to help Todd. Sheryl, hiding in the shadows, sees it all.
Seeking the same sense of purpose that motivated his wife, Jim befriends a strange homeless man named Eugene and volunteers at a homeless shelter where he meets Sheryl, Todd, who volunteers at the shelter, and Allen, whose church supports the facility. Todd sinks deeper into depression while Kerry continues her ruthless style of management.
Finding self-inflicted scratches on her daughter’s arms, Angela begins to suspect the worst. Allen learns his son has embraced white supremacist ideals and now owns a pistol. Allen takes it from him and asks Jim to dispose of it. Angela digs deeper and learns her ex-husband is physically abusing their daughter and confides in Jim. Meanwhile, Sheryl follows Todd, in an effort to let him know he did not kill the bicyclist.
But Todd succumbs to paranoia, loneliness and depression and commits suicide, coincidentally with the same gun Jim took from Allen. His suicide drives Kerry over the edge and she flees Charlotte for her former hometown of Fair Hope, NC. There, she meets the odd homeless man, Gene, who helps her understand her father’s failures were the result of PTSD from his service in Vietnam. She returns to Charlotte determined to turn her company into a more supportive and compassionate workplace.
Allen chooses to take his family to another city to start anew, but not before the former Golden Gloves Champion beats Angela’s ex-husband and demands he leave his daughter alone. Sheryl, seeking justice for Todd’s suicide, confronts Kerry outside her office and attempts to shoot her with Todd’s gun. In the stress of the confrontation, she collapses into labor. The two are taken to the hospital where Angela helps each woman. As it turns out, Kerry needs a new kidney and Jim volunteers his.
Unfortunately, he dies during the operation, the ultimate act of selflessness. Kerry transforms her business into one that supports the Charlotte homeless community, and Sheryl and her newborn son are the first to reap its benefits.

Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

ALLAN CHAPPEL enrolled in seminary to change the world. Little did he know how the world would change him. Years later, having dropped out of seminary after a romantic relationship ended in tragedy, Allan is invited by DR. DAN CARLISLE, son of CONGRESSMAN JAMES CARLISLE, to interview for a job on the staff of a startup medical think tank called Inc.Ubator. For Allan, the job is a second chance to become a part of a purposeful, life-changing organization. But just prior to his interview, Allan narrowly escapes death when an explosion destroys the Inc.Ubator offices, killing everyone inside.

Allan wakes up in the emergency room of a local hospital and is interrogated by INSPECTOR JOHNSON who calls the Inc.Ubator offices a family planning clinic. Following an urgent text message from his psychic AUNT JULIA, Allan slips away, only to be followed by an ominous BALD MAN who attempts to kill him twice. Allan narrowly eludes him.

DR. JOSEPH STRONG, president of LifeWatch, a powerful pro-life organization, claims to protect the unborn – but he has ulterior motives. His fervent, almost militant fund-raising campaigns have made him wealthy and powerful. Recent changes to Supreme Court rulings have negatively impacted LifeWatch’s income and he sees Inc.Ubator as one more dangerous menace. He doesn’t know that KEITH EDWARDS, an accountant at LifeWatch, doesn’t trust him and has been tracking him for some time.

News reports surface saying IncUbator was an abortion clinic and Allan is now wanted as a suspect. He hides in the home of former seminary friend, WES BLAKE – a divorced minister who is struggling with his own demons. There, Allan confesses he dropped out of seminary when he fell in love with a woman who loved Dan Carlisle. One night she told Allan she was pregnant by Carlisle who wanted nothing to do with the pregnancy. She then persuaded Allan to accompany her to an abortion clinic. The next day, guilt-stricken after being confronted by anti-abortion activists, she committed suicide.

Guided by text messages from Aunt Julia and shreds of clues left from the Inc.Ubator organization, Allan learns that DR. CAROLE PHILLIPS, was a consultant for Inc.Ubator, living in a former Soviet Union country (Lithuania) where laxer laws enabled her to practice her research. Carole reads about the bombing of the Inc.Ubator office and fears for her life and for the project she is currently working on. Allan ventures to Lithuania to find Carole in hopes to learn more about Inc.Ubator.

Back in the States, Dr. Strong meets with Congressman Carlisle to console him about Dan’s death and to persuade him to step down from office. Strong says his own destiny is to take Carlisle’s place in Congress and tells Carlisle his son’s involvement in an abortion clinic has damaged the congressman’s political efforts and persuades him to step aside. He also convinces Carlisle to support him as a candidate for Congress.

Keith Edwards is sure Dr. Strong was involved in the destruction of Inc.Ubator and confronts him about funds that have mysteriously vanished from the LifeWatch books (which Strong had used to pay the Bald Man to destroy Inc.Ubator, its staff and others). Edwards challenges Strong, who brushes him off.

In Lithuania, Carole introduces Allan to “Old Town,” a quaint part of the city where she lives. Old Town is filled with WWII architecture and looks as if it was plucked from the history books. A mutual attraction develops as the two begin to fall for one another. She takes Allan to her test site and says, “Welcome to Inc.Ubator II.” To his amazement, the facility is filled with personal computers surrounding a large object cloaked in a dark cloth. Carole lifts the covering to reveal an egg-shaped, glass globe containing a living human fetus. Carlisle and his staff had perfected the process of Ectogenesis – incubating an embryo until the fetus is mature enough to survive on its own and be placed for adoption. She presents it as a “3rd Option” to the abortion issue. Allan is fascinated with her work and the little girl in the glass bubble.

Wanting to help her, Allen goes shopping at the grocery store, where he spies the Bald Man (who had obviously followed him to Lithuania) in one of the security mirrors. Allan sneaks away to warn Carole. They decide they must remove the baby from the tank prematurely and go on the run to escape the Bald Man.

While they are attempting to birth the baby, the Bald Man breaks into Carole’s laboratory. He sees the fetus in the glass tank and is enraged. He attacks Allan and Carole. Determined to protect Carole and the baby, Allan and Carole fight the man and incapacitates him. But when he has a chance to kill his pursuer, Allan hesitates and the man escapes. They travel back to the U.S., posing as a family, to find out who would want to stop the Ectogenesis technology from being released.

They visit Allan’s Aunt Julia in Arizona and she encourages them to continue on their quest.

Allan learns that Strong, driven by political ambition, authorized the destruction of the Inc.Ubator offices, the killing of several consultants, and the attack on him. He uses the Bald Man, who struggles with PTSD after tours in Afghanistan, to carry out his schemes. Keith Edwards meets with Allan and provides additional evidence to implicate Strong. When he leaves the bar, a car careens around the corner, striking Edwards and killing him.

Shortly after, a LifeWatch security team, attempting to catch Allan, Carole, and the baby succeeds in wrecking their car, injuring Carole and taking the life of the baby. Carole is taken to a nearby hospital.

Exhausted and filled with grief, Allan finds his way to the hospital chapel. While there, Aunt Julia sends another psychic text urging Allan to contact Wes, so he phones him. Suddenly the Bald Man, bursts into the chapel and threatens to kill Allan. When Allan describes the true nature of Carole’s research, explaining that she was not conducting abortions but seeking a means around them, the Bald Man turns his anger to Strong, who had deceived him. He sets out to stop the politician. Allan decides he must prevent the pending assassination attempt, even though Dr. Strong had tried to kill him.

Allan doesn’t realize that Wes heard his confrontation with the Bald Man on his phone and recorded the conversation. To protect his friend, Wes calls Inspector Johnson who moves in to catch Allan.

Allan anticipates the Bald Man will try to attack Dr. Strong at an upcoming press conference where he will announce his candidacy for Carlisle’s seat in Congress. Allan attends the event and searches in vain for the Bald Man, but is apprehended by Inspector Johnson. The Bald Man enters the stage, ready to attack Dr. Strong. Allan breaks free from the detective and rushes the stage to stop him. In the chaos of the attack, Strong’s bodyguards shoot Allan and the Bald Man. Allan is taken to the same hospital Carole is in. The Bald Man dies at the scene and Inspector Johnson arrests Strong.

In the aftermath of the chaos, Allan and Carole come together to bury the baby. Wes leads the funeral ceremony. DR. COLLINS, another Inc.Ubator consultant plans to replicate the Ectogenesis process and Carole moves back to Lithuania to continue her work.

Allan and Wes resume their friendship. They meet at a local restaurant and watch as a pregnant prostitute crosses the street in front of them. Allan expresses the hope that the Carlisle process might one day help people like her.

7 Sanctuaries

History

It was a radical time, filled with promise, hope, and exciting new opportunities. It was a time when people made sure their voices were heard; they changed our world forever. It was thrilling and frightening and challenging. That time was the 1960s. When facing times of tumultuous transformation, people often seek solace and comfort in safe havens—sanctuaries, if you will—to protect themselves and their loved ones from the stormy world around them. Through it all - the turmoil, the rock music, the assassination of powerful leaders, the tent revivals, KKK rallies, space walks and the war, the little community of Spring Lake grows and flourishes and changes, as does our nation and as does our world.

Voting Rights

The release of the movie, SELMA, and the upcoming celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday, remind us of the value, privilege and right to vote. In this section of the secular novel, 7 SANCTUARIES, Rev. Phillips contemplates the killing of another Civil Rights activist, James Reeb and challenges people in a small diner to a deeper understanding of the situation in 1965.

Christmas Nativity

One of the most common symbols of Christmas is the nativity scene - Mary, Joseph, The Baby and sheep, cows, angels, shepherds, wisemen, etc. In 7 SANTCUARIES, Rev. Stephen Phillips was in charge of his church's "Living Nativity", an outdoor display of the Christmas scene with church members playing the cast. In this excerpt, Phillips discovers more in his manger than he expected.

51 Years Ago Today...

On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King delivered his "I have a dream" speech. Abour four years later, he participated in an anti-war march in New York City that included as many as 400,000 people. In 7 SANCTUARIES, Rev. Stephen Phillips, a "radical preach" from Spring Lake, Florida took a bus to New York to participate in that historic occasion. His story is outlined in this brief bubble. Do you remember those incredible days?

Remember the Moon Walk?

Where were you forty-five years ago on July 21, 1969. Many of us were planted in front of our TVs, watching the first man walk on the moon... This section of 7 SANCTUARIES portrays the Franklin family as they gathered together to watch the moon walk. (NOTE: Michael Jackson had nothing to do with this moonwalk). Enjoy!

John F. Kennedy

Lately I've been watching CNN's special series, "The '60s", a fascinating look at one of the most transformative decades we've ever known. The first episode or two focus on John F. Kennedy's life and its impact on the world. I'm amazed at all that he faced in less than one term as president: the Bay of Pigs invasion, the construction of The Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, The beginning of the Vietnam War, the Nuclear Test Ban treaty, the beginning of the space race, Civil Rights and so much more. It was an amazing time. And we all felt it - in large cities and in small, throughout our country. This account describes how Katie Franklin experienced and dealt with the assassination of JFK. Like all of us, Katie was stunned. Kennedy was respected and loved and this senseless act woke us to the horrors and evils in the world around us. Everything changed on November 23, 1964. In some ways, for the better. In other ways, for the worse. But on this day, everything changed.

Fifty Years Ago...

A lifetime ago, and yet it seems like yesterday. The 1960s profoundly affected everyone who was alive at the time. Our response to the rampant change, tumultuous events and exciting opportunities varied from person to person. Each of us sought comfort in a safe haven of one kind or another. 7 SANCTUARIES takes us through the '60s from the perspective of seven different sanctuaries - Family, Business, Nature, Church, School, Sports and the World. Some were sanctuaries lasted. Others did not. Enjoy a journey back in time, fifty years ago, through the 1960s.

Learning about Klaipeda

One of the most famous natural resources of Klaipeda, Lithuania is Amber. The pine sap falls into the Baltic and becomes incredibly hard. Citizens of Klaipeda have collected the amber for centuries. Here, Allan, attempting to impress Carole, buys their new baby an amber teething bracelet only to discover that he didn't buy what he thought he did. We guys make mistakes, sometimes.

Grocery Store Suspense

This is one of my favorite scenes, primarily because I believe it contains a lot of suspense. Allan, who is being pursued by a mysterious bald man, goes to the local Iki (the name of a grocery store chain in Lithuania). He thinks the bald man is still in the States, but is concerned that he may have followed Allan to Lithuania.

The Sidekick

The main character in THE 3rd OPTION is a seminary dropout. His sidekick is a 'fallen' minister. Ministers made interesting characters, particularly for this book. First, ministers are seldom mentioned in novels, except as out-of-touch or humorous 'extras'. There are actually over 500,000 ministers in the U.S. According to a Pew Poll, clergy are the 5th most respected occupation. So I thought readers might be able to relate to them, particularly their humanness. Also, the main theme is extremely controversial, and is often scorned by preachers.I found it interesting to put these people into such a controversial situation. I hope you enjoy these characters.

Power of Perspective

Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth. Marcus Aurelius To be successful, complete and content, one needs to learn to see different perspectives. Viewing the world around us in various ways helps us make wise decisions. In this passage, Allan flashbacks to an earlier time when he learned a powerful perspective from his father.

Klaipeda, Lithuania

A few years ago I had the fortune of teaching a college class on Business Ethics at LCC University in Klaipeda, Lithuania. I instantly fell in love with the city, it's blend of Post-WWII with Cold War Soviet and modern day architecture made it seem like looking through a time portal. I hope to return. Someday.
