“So,” he said. “You do like the name ‘Amber Phillips,’ don’t you?”
“It’s a great choice.”
“I even bought her a teething bracelet in the park. It’s made of amber,” he said, even more proudly.
“You didn’t! Not in the park.”
“Why? Are they dirty? We can clean it.”
“No, you probably can’t.”
“What do you mean?”
Carole shook her head and said, “Go get it.”
He obediently went upstairs and fetched all of the baby items he had purchased that day. Reluctantly, he handed over the teething bracelet.
“You bought this in the park, right?” she asked.
“Yes. Two or three women were selling lots of amber jewelry from makeshift tables today. The prices were really good.”
“I’ll bet they were.” She took the bracelet and rubbed one of the stones against her jeans. She sniffed that stone closely and placed it in her mouth. “Just as I thought. Taste.”
He held the bracelet to his lips and licked one of the stones. It tasted sweet.
“Allan,” Carole said. “It’s toffee. It’s a popular scam with the vendors in the park. They fool tourists into thinking they’re getting a great price on real amber jewelry, but they’re actually selling jewelry made of toffee.”
He felt like an idiot.
Carole seemed to sense his dejected feelings, and she came over and hugged him. Wrapping slender arms around his waist, she said, “But it was a very sweet gesture.” She started laughing.
He laughed also. They laughed at each other and could barely contain themselves.
She squeezed him tighter. “We’re going to get out of this, aren’t we?”
“You, me and Baby Amber,” he said. “The sweetest baby in the world.” They both started laughing again.
