When they were faced with times of tumultuous transformation, people sought solace and comfort in safe havens—sanctuaries, if you will—to protect themselves and their loved ones from the stormy world around them. Some people naturally turned to religion and community and family. Others sought such sanctuaries in a more deliberate, conscious way, hoping to find in them a place to celebrate the new and to teach alternative thought.
We continue to seek sanctuaries when our worlds go through transformations today. We may choose from the seven discussed in this novel—family, business, nature, church, school, sports, or the world itself—or we may choose among any number of others, such as fame, patriotism, fortune, friends … The list goes on. Some of these sanctuaries have what it takes to stand the test of time. Others inevitably fail. We do our best to choose our safe havens with care.
Wishing you the safest sanctuaries in times of turmoil,
