“Jayden’s visiting me for summer break,” I said.
Marcus nodded. “Cool,” he said.
My cell phone rang, so I took it out of my pocket. “Crime Solver’s Detective Agency. This is Karrine. How may I solve a crime for you?”
I listened while the person on the other end spoke. I nodded occasionally while Jayden and Marcus watched. “I see,” I finally said. “I’ll be right over.”
“What is it?” Jayden asked. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation. “Is it a mystery?”
I nodded. “Someone’s painted all the ponies at Spencer Jackson’s stable. Now the kids don’t know what color pony to pick.”
“Someone painted them!” Marcus exclaimed. He laughed hard and loud. “I gotta see this.” He took off at top speed, his back tires spinning as they sought traction on the pavement.
“I need to get right over there,” I said.
I looked at Jayden and rubbed my chin, trying to figure out what to do with her while I was on my mystery. “Do you think you could hang out with my mother for a while?”
Jayden shook her head. “No way—I’m coming with you.” She started walking off in the direction Marcus had ridden.
I threw up my hands. “Okay,” I said, “but you’d better not slow me down.”
I rummaged in the garage for my old bicycle. I gave it a quick inspection, blew off the dust and presented it to her. “Looks like it’s still in good condition.” I put some air in the tires, and she jumped on it and tested it out. She came within a few inches of wiping out my mother’s car, but she slammed on the brakes at the last minute.
She grinned at me. “Brakes work fine,” she said.
I sighed and hopped on my own bike. “Let’s go.”
I led the way with Jayden pedaling fast to keep up. I looked back at her a few times, just to make sure she was still with me. Each time she waved and gave me a thumb up sign.
