Max led Gabriella along the hallway and halted in front of the closed door to the nursery. Because of her surprise pregnancy and because her vamp body was suddenly changing after one hundred eighty years, she’d procrastinated about decorating the nursery. In fact, she’d just plain avoided entering it, promising Max week after week to work on it with him. But she always managed to find some excuse. This pregnancy wasn’t supposed to happen. But it did, defying everything vampire. What if Maxine didn’t survive? She knew nothing about a hybrid being, and it frightened her. Even thinking about the nursery shoved that unknown future to the forefront of her mind.
“I have to confess that I’ve already starting working on the nursery. Please don’t be angry.”
Safe to say, Max couldn’t read her thoughts. Which was for the best, because she didn’t want to admit she was relieved.
Max turned the doorknob and pushed the door open.
“I did what I know. But we can change it,” he quickly added. “Do it the way you want.”
Gabriella stepped inside with Max beside her. Her jaw dropped open. Gabriella gazed at the mural of Snow White and the seven dwarfs, with the evil queen in the background. Snow White was as pale as she was!
“Max! It’s gorgeous!”
“Not too Disney for you?”
“No!”
Then she noticed the brass cradle. “Oh, look!” She walked over to the cradle and used a finger to set it rocking.
“I drew up the plans, and Uncle Claude bent the brass. He did a great job, huh?”
“You two did this together?”
“Yeah, we worked on it during the nights you were at the hospital.”
Max laid the baby bat quilt into the cradle and propped up the vamp rag doll in a corner of the cradle.
He turned around and gently placed his hands onto her rounded belly.
“Now it’s perfect, just like Maxine is going to be—part you, part me.”
Which was exactly what she hoped for.
