WITH A FLAME IN MY HEART and the momentum to move forward, I enrolled in a local junior college. Because I needed to attend college during the day, I transferred my job to a small animal emergency clinic that was open all night long. Working at night while going to college, I took the basic math courses from one of my mother’s golfing friends. Mrs. Smith just happened to be the head of the math department at the junior college. She was an excellent teacher and spent time with the entire class, teaching math from the simple to the complex. As a result of Mrs. Smith’s class, I began to understand mathematics and earned As in all classes related to math. Knowledge gained from Mrs. Smith would later carry me through calculus and statistics. She was so successful in teaching mathematics that her teaching style was published by Merrill Publishing Company and used in colleges across the United States of America. What a blessing from God that Mrs. Smith was aware of different learning styles. She understood dyslexia and presented mathematics in a way that I could understand. She was a teacher at heart and truly cared about each of her students.
