Unless you're moving to one of our larger cities, like New York City or Chicago, it is almost impossible to get around in the U.S. without a motor vehicle. This is because most U.S. cities developed after the creation of the automobile so cities tend to be expansive. Basically, our cities grew out rather than up!
If a city has good, fast public transportation, it tends to only serve the core areas of the city. Unless you live, work, and shop in the inner part of the city, you will NOT have access to good public transportation. You also won’t be able to get to the outer parts of the city easily. Your public commute will most likely be complicated and take a great deal of time. For example, we once lived in a smaller city (100,000 people) where it took over an hour to ride the bus to the university, which was only 2 miles from our house. Needless to say, my husband cycled to class most of the time.
