My friend Cordelia (35) is a woman of few words. But when she says something, I lean in. Yesterday she summed up her three guidelines for a healthy eating mindset:
• No diets.
• No deadlines.
• No damage control.
No diets: I no longer punish myself with dieting. Diets are simply a distraction that keeps me from doing the inner work I need to do to fall in love with myself. Diets will never bring about the self-love I yearn for. Whatever you eat to take the weight off is what you will need to continue to eat to keep the weight off. Diets perpetuate the problem. Eating in moderation is the solution.
No deadlines: I no longer subject myself to unrealistic, rigid expectations and time constraints about how fast I must lose how many pounds by what event date.
No damage control: There will be times I overeat. When this happens, I no longer require myself to cut back on subsequent meals to “make up for” my earlier bouts of spontaneous eating. Eating is not a moral issue.
Call to Action:
There is no magic. Be willing to go to any lengths to let go of your diet mindset. Do the work to fall in love with yourself. You’ve got this!
