A person’s journey through life can be hampered by a number of obstacles—physical, mental, or emotional. Many times, these hurdles or handicaps are problems that are put in our way at birth, but sometimes they can develop in us over our lifetime. What I’ve observed over the years is that no one is born convinced that these limitations, no matter how great they may seem to be, will halt their journey through life. Doubt only grows from self-perception, a limited state of mind, or even expectations that others place on us. No matter what its source, every “handicap” should be reexamined. We should ask ourselves: Is the handicap real? Is it changeable? Can it be overcome?
Whether we admit it to ourselves or not, our handicaps, in life and golf, are only as real and as permanent as we allow them to be.
