“Maybe rescuing them is supposed to be your job,” I went on, in a fit of inspiration. “You’re the Counselor, after all.”
“I’m your Counselor!”
I shook my head again. “I don’t think so. Looks Far didn’t say, ‘Naomi’s Counselor.’ What he said was, ‘the Counselor.’”
“For the team! Counselor for the team!” Her eyes opened wide in shock; one hand flew to the middle of her chest. “My God, Naomi! How can I save an entire Indian nation from alcoholism and despair? I’m a social worker, not a miracle worker!”
I didn’t say anything. I just watched as she worked through what she’d just said.
Finally, she said, “Oh.”
“Yeah,” I said, and sat back down on my bed. “Welcome to my world.”
