Just a little walk in the park at night.

Naomi and Joseph have argued -- something they seem to be doing a lot lately -- and she walked out to calm her nerves. Now, on the path along Cherry Creek, an uncharacteristic mist has risen, and something springs at her from the darkness. In Aztec myth, Tezcatlipoca is the brother (or one of the brothers) of Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent. Tezcatlipoca is an agent of chaos, and his animal totem is the Jaguar.

Tapped: Book Three of the Pipe Woman Chronicles

Science Fiction & Fantasy

Ah, winter in South Dakota…. Naomi Witherspoon, chosen by a Lakota Indian goddess to mediate a truce in heaven, is in the midst of a number of down-to-earth problems. She hasn’t heard from her boyfriend, Joseph, in weeks. She has also been attacked recently by a man channeling an Aztec jaguar god. Her best friend Shannon thinks she ought to get out of town for awhile – but what Shannon proposes is a road trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to track down Naomi’s father, who doesn’t know she exists. Naomi agrees to go, but the additional stress literally makes her sick. Their search is complicated by a surly teenager; a mysterious walled compound that may or may not belong to Loki, the Norse Trickster; and a blizzard or two. And why, to top it off, is Naomi dreaming of a wolf? As she tells Shannon, the way the woo-woo usually works, she figures the two of them are about to find out.

"I'm not a miracle worker!"

Naomi and Shannon have just arrived on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Pine Ridge is one of the poorest areas of the United States, and alcoholism is rampant. It's also where Naomi's father lives. Shannon has just touched on one of Naomi's fears -- that her Indian heritage will drag her down so that she can never go back to her old life. Partly in retaliation for that bit of truth, Naomi is teasing her friend by suggesting that Shannon's destiny might be to solve all of the Lakota's problems. But Shannon takes her seriously -- and realizes exactly how much White Buffalo Calf Pipe Woman is expecting of Naomi. If Shannon can't save the Latoka, how can Naomi achieve peace in heaven?

Jehovah Has a Sense of Humor

Naomi has finally reached the Big Mediation -- the one between the Christian God and all the pagan gods and goddesses that the whole series has been driving toward. In this scene, White Buffalo Calf Pipe Woman has just outlined all the ways humanity has trashed God's Creation: ruining the environment, using Scripture as an excuse to treat other human races like animals, and so on. God acknowledges all of that. But it's also clear that He takes great delight in what He has created -- and He has a sense of humor, too.

Seized: Book One of the Pipe Woman Chronicles

Science Fiction & Fantasy

The winter solstice 2012 won't be the end of the world. It will be the beginning of the end.... Naomi has a pretty sweet life. But a white buffalo calf is bowing to her in her dreams. And who is the Native American man who has been following her around? Naomi doesn’t know it, but things are about to change....

"Something weird is going on."

This is the first time Naomi gets a clue about how much things have changed. She's a lawyer -- rational and level-headed -- and she doesn't believe in what she calls "the woo-woo". On the other hand, she's been settling mediation cases almost too easily, but she has written that off to her improving skill level. There's no way she can explain away this incident.
