“Ok little girl, you win this time.”
“Run!” The voice was louder this time, almost shouting in my ear. I covered my ear in response. Who the hell was talking to me? “RUN NOW!” It said again and another flash dashed across my eyes, nearly blinding me for a second.
With my body violently trembling, I opened the door and leaped out, flying past him while he smiled, holding the bat that was probably meant to end my life.
Outside the air was heavy with August’s humidity, but it felt fresh and light to me. I was free. I heard crickets, the kind you hear in the late summer. It brought me back to my childhood days and I felt nostalgic for a moment, wishing I was a child, instead of a victim of violence. I looked over my shoulder, half expecting to see him following me but he wasn’t. All I saw was the distant light of a 7-11 down the street, so I started to make my way there. With blood dripping down my legs, I began to limp towards the store.
I saw recycle buckets on the side of the road, waiting to be picked up. It had rained earlier that day so there was some water underneath the contents inside of them. I picked it up and washed the blood off as best I could.
