Not all women diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of breast cancer—or any cancer. The National Breast Cancer Coalition says over 75% of women with breast cancer have no family history of the disease and less than 10% have a known gene mutation that increases risk.

What? How can that be? I have no family history of breast cancer. In fact, no one in my family history has had any cancers. I went completely numb. One moment I was getting ready for work, and the next I got life-changing news. I feel so bad for the doctors who have to deliver this type of news to their patients. I had only met him one time, but I could tell he hated telling me bad news just as much as I hated receiving it.
