Synopsis

Leslie, the overachiever of the four Nurseketeers, is passionate about working in the operating room. Struggling with setting priorities and the inability to say no, Leslie can’t keep up with her studies, meet the expectations of her basketball coach, serve effectively as president of the Student Nurses’ Association, work part time, and remain fully engaged with the love of her life. Her dream of becoming a nurse is challenged when she fails the first exam of her senior year. Compounding her frustration, she and her mother are arguing. The relationship with her boyfriend is heading for the rocks and her world is crumbling as her challenges loom like mountains to climb, the summit hidden by clouds of frustration, failure, and despair.

Author Biography

Joy Don Baker & Terri Goodman, nursing students in the ‘70s like the fictional characters in their Nurseketeers series, are both writers in professional nursing literature. They met in the ‘80s and have remained friends for years. As co-authors, their mission is to share enjoyment, writing, and learning through meaningful stories about diverse nursing characters. Both are well-established leaders in perioperative nursing. Dr. Baker teaches at the University of Texas at Arlington and served as the editor-in-chief of AORN Journal. Dr. Goodman is an entrepreneur and an approved provider of continuing education as the principal at Terri Goodman & Associates. Baker & Goodman have produced the award-winning book A, B, & Cs of Author Partnering, the definitive how-to guide that leads readers through creating a partnership, establishing a productive work environment, and producing a work of fiction, non-fiction, or journal article.

Best Place to Grow Up

To raise a family there's no "best place." Every environment has something unique that makes it a great place to grow up. Small towns provide a simpler, safer atmosphere with fewer restrictions and greater social intimacy, but with less exposure to diversity. The vast resources and multicultural influences of a big city provide options in every aspect of life (food, lodging, education, recreation), a broader awareness of the world's diverse population, but less freedom because of a diminished sense of safety. Every environment provides opportunities for growth and development along with the need to adaptation to challenges.

“That’s small-town East Texas for you,” J.R. added. “Mike’s dad’s the high school coach, and mine’s the police chief. Lemme tell you, it was a culture shock coming to the Big D from a place you know like the back of your hand. Everybody knows everybody in Arp.”

“I can relate,” Leslie replied. “Abita Springs is tiny. You can get anywhere in ten minutes on a bike. If it weren’t for my scholarship, I don’t think I would ever have ventured this far from home.”

“You guys just don’t know what you missed, growing up in those little towns,” Missy said. “Big cities have so much more to offer. Arp is cute, but it doesn’t have a theater or any decent shopping to speak of. It doesn’t even have a country club!”
