Beau eased the SS out of Leon’s driveway on to North Louise on his first full night home after leaving Lori and Ralph. He had to come back to Atlanta, but this year’s return had been different. He had only one thing on his mind—Bitzy Jeter.
He made a right at Main, drove to the 59 loop, north past the DQ, and coming off the loop onto North Louise, he went right on Miller, left on Howe, and back out on Main so he would miss Leon’s house. He avoided detection and his father’s possible wrath, not that he wanted to sneak out, but he had to get away from the silence in that house, the maddening ticking of the clocks on the walls. Lori’s house had been alive with noise, dogs barking, Lori singing, the kitchen alight with delightful food, and Ralph filled up the space in the house so much at night he didn’t have to say word to make the house feel complete.
