L is for Listen. This may seem like an obvious step since the last encouragement was to ask questions but there is a difference between listening well and wasting the question-asking time you have with your mentor. If part of the responsibility for a mentor is to give wise counsel, then mentees are accountable to be effective listeners. This applies even when we don’t want to hear the difficult truth a mentor is sharing with us. Hearing is letting the words enter your ear canal before filing them away in our brains for a later time. Listening is allowing the precious words dripping in God’s wisdom to envelop and soak into our heart, soul and mind. We can permit our hearts take in the precious jewels of God’s truth and build up who we are as children of God. Then our soul draws ever closer to the Spirit of God who helps you process what you have heard. What you hear builds the audacious, beautiful life God desires for us. This is true listening. Soak into the wisdom, don’t just hear it.
