Let's pause in the story to reflect. Our stories aren't too far off from this woman's when you think about it. We may not have people yelling, "Unclean! Unclean!" as we walk down the street, but they may think something mean or unfair as we go by. They may turn to whisper to a friend, "Did you hear about her? She used to…" (We can all fill in a different phrase to finish that sentence, can't we?) The whispers might be about poor choices we've made in the past, questions about how we're living in our present, or a simple disregard for the possibility of a celebrated future. All those shouting, "Unclean! Unclean!" whether to the woman in the first century or, in modern terms to us today, have greatly underestimated the power of the hope we have in Jesus Christ.
