First Letter
You asked me if we could talk about confidence. That was it. You didn’t say anything else. I didn’t know what area of confidence you might want to discuss. Was it confidence in yourself as a man? The physical man, physical attributes, stature? Was it confidence in your relationships with women? Was it confidence in your transition to adulthood and moving out of the house? Or confidence in your relationship with God? As I was trying to guess Holy Spirit stopped me and said: “it doesn’t matter what area of confidence he’s struggling with.”
Then instantly it hit me. Holy Spirit was right because the answer is the same if what you’re looking for is self-confidence, confidence in yourself and your abilities in some area. As a middle-aged man, I have come to learn that I must trust and rely on God in every area of my life. There is no area in which I can be so built up in my wisdom or abilities that I don’t need to look to God first. To me, it is the “easy button.”
I learned as a young manager not to knock my head against the wall trying to figure out how to manage the people and things under my responsibility. I learned that is was easier just to ask God for the answers. I believed that if God could manage all the daily operations of the universe, then He certainly had some wisdom for my situation. I learned that I don’t have to be ashamed that I asked God for the answers versus coming up with my own answers. I learned that I can still lift my head up as a leader and experience great success. I can do this all while simultaneously acknowledging that God was the source of all of my good ideas, my abilities, and any strengths or good qualities they saw while they observed me.
As a single man, I learned the hard way that when I don’t seek God’s direction or even worse when I ignore God’s direction, the consequences can be disastrous. I learned that it’s just easier and safer to just follow His leading.
I learned as a husband and father I didn’t have the skill sets to love my wife properly or to lead and guide our family. However, I learned that God was always there, ready to give wisdom, grace, and encouragement.
