After their work on the bridge and making some bogus ship manifest entries, George and Summit returned to their hotel, via a roundabout way in case someone had taken an interest in their hotel choice.
Summit hadn’t said a word all afternoon, but once they got back to the room for their informational review, he offered, “I’m glad my planning paid off for us. Do you wish to apologize now for disparaging my approach to this situation?”
George stared incredulously at Summit then finally qualified, “If memory serves, you recommended that we walk down there, gain access to their ship’s logs, and calmly photograph everything with our special issue cell phones and leave peaceably, looking like a couple of shiny new pennies! Perhaps you weren’t paying attention. I saw an opportunity unfold, stepped into a persona that was easily accepted by everyone, and got us on board where we comfortably photographed everything!”
Summit smiled and said, “Yes, that was my plan from the beginning, was it not?”
George’s cognitive skills now fully engaged, and he rotated his head moderately to the left and commented, “Well, hell! I have to admit what we did was almost exactly the way you laid it out. What is our next moderate plan that you want to have executed so brilliantly, Mr. Summit, the Surmiser?”
Summit, now quite pleased with the compliment, responded, “Since you have graciously complimented my planning skills, I should like, as a truly conciliatory gesture, to comment on your impressive display of impromptu actions that skillfully got us in and out of our target. May I say, a hearty well done, George!”
George responded with a smirk, and he felt compelled to ask, “Summit, as you go through life I have to know, how does it feel not to be cursed with self-awareness?”
Summit pondered a moment and then replied, “I will give your question some thought, but for now we should focus on the information we obtained from the shipping manifest. Are you okay with that?”
George, not quite sure if he was ever going to wake up from this surreal series of discussions, nodded
slightly and offered, “It’s easy to see why you are the senior member of this task team. Yeah, alright, let’s get into character. I kind of want to know why they are porting weapons and munitions labeled as furniture and why they detoured to Singapore. I recommend that we upload all our findings to the company collaboration server so Julie and Juan can see our progress.”
Summit reflected a moment and asked, “How did you know that I iron my clothes before I retire for the night, as well as when I get up in the morning?”
George suppressed his smirk as he responded, “I didn’t. I guessed again, and you took the bait, again.” Summit sulked at George’s deftness of obtaining information from so
meone who should know better.
