It was a Sunday like any other. I had just arrived at the green park by Toluca Lake, done a few stretches and was ready for a good run when I heard a distinctive ringtone from my cell. It was Veronica! I knew, because I had given her a special ringtone, so that I’d quickly be able to distinguish when she called me. I felt happier than ever having a sweet down-to-earth girlfriend that I could love, trust and be with. I felt like I was finally starting to do really well on the football team and getting to the level of shape I wanted to be in.
My life was finally coming together after all the family drama from my parent’s divorce last year – My mom’s life in the spotlight and my dad having to put up with it. On some level, I guess it was an accomplishment on my dad’s behalf putting up with it for as long as he did. I felt sad for him, but also a bit guilty for taking his side. I grabbed my cell from my back pocket looking forward to hearing her sweet and comforting voice.
“James?” she paused.
“Hi babe! What’s up?”
“James I…” she hesitated.
I felt a chill go down my spine. I could hear something was wrong by the tone of her voice.
“Veronica, sweetie, what?” I asked concerned.
“James, I can’t do this anymore.”
“What do you mean?” I felt clueless.
