The ramp floor was textured with a slightly rubbery surface which made traction good and eased the climb. On the left side, as they spiraled up and to the right, was a solid wall, with the same gray color scheme, but this time with a lime green stripe, following their path upward. On the right was a waist high wall, topped with a rounded bar that made for a convenient handrail. Clearance over their heads was several feet, leaving them with what would have been a comfortable walk, if not for the steepness. Just a little more incline than was comfortable. Rachael was glad that she was in good shape. This was looking to be more physically challenging than the caving she had started out expecting as the day's activities.
Minutes later they came to the first anomaly. A gate in the right-hand side rail. "James, why would you be able to open this over an empty shaft?"
"Don't have a clue. I had been expecting to find doors in the left wall at every floor or something, but not a gate in the right. I don't think I want to open it and jump though."
"Agreed there, not nearly ready for that."
"Climb away." Putting deeds to words, James resumed their trudging climb.
