Timmins strolled into the engineering compartment. He rarely visited this area of this ship. He knew that he should visit the area more often, but he hated the dirty smell that often resonated off the machines. If he needed to hear anything from engineering he preferred to have Mehre come up to him. However on this occasion, Mehre had insisted that the Captain was needed in engineering to see some data that couldn't be transferred up to the bridge. As was usual with his infrequent pre-planned visits to engineering, Mehre was waiting for him at the entrance.
"What am I doing here?" Timmins asked resentfully, the smell of engine oil and fluids had already begun to make him feel sick.
"I wanted to show you some readings I took last night," Mehre stated, "these are the power readings from the escape pod we have in the cargo bay at the moment."
Timmins took the diagnostic pad that Mehre handed him and did a mental shrug, he had no idea what all the information on the pad meant. He handed it back to Mehre, "You know full well that I can't tell an ohm from a joule."
"The power cells in the life pod are zero," Mehre replied blankly.
"So?"
"If they are zero Captain; how the hell did we receive a distress signal from it?" Mehre asked.
