Entering the fray

Like many people John would love to live a life that is quiet. But when his car breaks down one day he finds that the same quiet that he desires unsettles him and leads him to a chance encounter that will change him forever. This story is based on the myth of the White Lady and more specifically the myth surrounding Jamestown Road, Jamestown, North Carolina. According to legend: In the 1920s, a school girl was coming home from a dance that her parents did not want her to attend because of the young man who was escorting her. Apparently, he had a bad reputation was not acceptable to the girl's family. The young girl was killed on her way back from the dance that misty evening. It is said that she can be seen either standing at the old underpass or walking down the road.

Describing War

To many British men who signed up in 1914, it was thought of as a great adventure that would be over by Christmas. But in the end, like this character, the war had become a nightmare where the only escapes were death or injury. This character explains the futility of so many attacks done so by the men of the First World War and the fear running through his head; like so many of his fellow soldiers on both sides.

Realising the obvious

I wanted to create something which quite often escapes a lot of us at times: the obvious. Throughout this story the characters have talked about how this escape pod is essentially space junk with no power. Yet they received a distress signal from it which allowed them to track it and "rescue" it. But the crew connect the dots far too late.

The Predator

This is taken from the short story "Prey". In this I compare the view point character to a predator who is hunting for his next meal. What I love about this story is that despite the evil that comes across throughout the story, you sense that before he was kind soul that had a tragic death. This is comparable to how we see the babies of predators, we view them being cute and then in the end they become hunters who will hunt down their prey without remorse.

Moving On

The start of the third story in the collection entitled "The Loss" deals with the idea of watching your own funeral. When I was writing this the image of watching my own sent a shiver down my spine. I would hope by the funeral that I would have moved on, but for my main character that is not the case.
