Then everything gets spooky. My house is small enough that, when I'm in the middle of it I'm aware of most of the space. That's not true in this house. There are plenty of spaces outside of my sensory range where people or things could hide, waiting for me to fall asleep. I stand in the kitchen, surrounded by dogs expecting me to provide entertainment and/or food. To reassure myself, I tour the entire house again, dogs following, looking in and under things and occasionally calling out, “Hello?”
Which is dumb. I mean, if I get a response, I will immediately drop dead of fright right there.
