The United States was at war with Japan, and soon afterward with Germany, when
Dupsey and I were in grammar school. Everyone attending Rosewood Avenue Grade
School was instructed to bring a “survival bag” to school daily and to wear the formal
I.D. tag around our neck where it could be clearly seen. Because we were on the West
Coast, Rosewood conducted bomb drills regularly. Whenever the alarms sounded, we
students would immediately stand and file in an orderly fashion into the hallway where
we were told to sit on the floor close to the walls and cover our heads with our arms to
protect them from potential falling bricks and debris. We remained in this position until
an announcement came over the loudspeaker that the drill was over and we could return
to class. We were instructed to treat each drill as though it were a genuine bombing
attack. It goes without saying that each time the alarm reverberated throughout the
school
