“I’ve been thinking about it, Carol. I want you to fly out to Michigan in late October
and spend a few days checking out my Beverly Hills. You may not like it.”
I drew a large black X on the kitchen wall calendar at the end of each day, becoming
increasing excited as I saw the equally large O encircling Trip Day.
Ian met me at Metro Airport in Detroit and we drove to his Beverly Hills, a village
suburb established in 1958. “It’s only about four square miles,” he said. “Your Beverly
Hills is almost six square miles, not much bigger.”
“I had envisioned your village being similar to Dearborn’s Greenfield Village.” I said
eager to impress him with my homework on Michigan. “Maybe we can visit it while I’m
here, unless you have made other plans, of course. I can’t say I’m a history buff, but the
European cities have preserved most of theirs, rather than demolishing buildings to create
skyscrapers. I know that Greenfield was created by Henry Ford, who was a strong
believer of the need to preserve America’s history, especially anything having to do with
technology.”
“I’ll take you there. Technology was Ford’s specialty, as far as the car industry is
concerned, but he was impressed with what others were doing at that time to improve
