Something happened to MICHAEL EASTON when he was a child.
Something so terrifying it became a recurring nightmare.
A nightmare that holds within it the seeds of his own destruction.
A nightmare he thought he’d left far behind him.
But it was waiting. Buried deep in his subconscious.
Waiting to emerge when the time was right, and compel him to destroy everything he cares about.
Will one selfless act offer him the redemption he is seeking and give him his life back?

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This book, like my first one, "Pretty Flamingo" is very personal to me, as I used some actual life experiences to create the fictional story around.

The novel does contain some profanity, although I have tried to keep it to a minimum but, in order to add authenticity to some of the scenes I found it necessary.  If as a reader you dislike profanity of any kind, this book might not be your "cup of tea".

The story  also has a spiritual and slightly paranormal aspect to it and if this is also something you're not comfortable with, you may want to give it a miss.

The main character, Michael Easton, struggles with his inner demons and uses alcohol as a means of burying them.  I am not condoning the use of alcohol, or drugs, as a means of solving life's problems but, in real life, this is what some people unfortunately resort to.  My hope was to instil the idea that perhaps there is sometimes some underlying cause for excessive drinking and that alcohol abuse is not always the actual problem, but a bad solution to whatever the real, hidden problem might be.

'Savannah' is Perry Martin's second novel following on to his first - the excellent and captivating 'Pretty Flamingo' . Perry Martin is a very talented singer, songwriter and he draws on his many years as a professional musician to enhance the character and experience of the main character Michael Easton. This gives the whole book an authenticity that is both accurate and a true insight into the working musicians life.
The use of flash backs creates tension which is only released in the final chapter. A good captivating read!

They say there's nothing new under the sun, and with respect to fiction I do think it's a valid point. Every story--every good one anyway--is a variation on others told sometime before. Comments we sometimes read about this or that novel being "cliche" because it tells a tale with a familiar story structure are ignorant of that fact, and are using the wrong word--instead of "cliche" they should be saying "timeless." Basic plot lines are revisited repeatedly because they're so satisfying. They speak to us in worthwhile ways. They're classic--they never get old.

SAVANNAH is a heart-wrenching story of a haunting--of some memory, or curse...or something...out of the protagonist's past. It is destroying him. Sound familiar? Oh, but it won't be.

Perry Martin weaves this tale with the same powerful emotional impact he crafted into "Pretty Flamingo." His style is unmistakable, and once again this one won't let you down. He takes the tale very deftly through leaps in time, back to long ago, forward to the present, back, forward. He does it so naturally, and that isn't easy. He paints a complex protagonist little by little through the struggles against the dark thing, and against himself. I found my connection to that protagonist went through several transformations before it was all done.

Martin does dialog well, and subliminal dialog too. He's also quite good at plopping a reader right into the soup.

And if you think you've guessed the "answer," you won't have. It's far more encompassing than a single thing. There are nuances to it that I've never seen done in this kind of tale. And once revealed, they're quite believable. Martin is thorough--he won't leave loose threads to nag at the back of your mind.

Despite the fact that this is a book based on a character with a destructive past and that there have been many others, SAVANNAH has its own satisfying flavor. And it does some important things uniquely, like take us through the professional ups and downs of a rising artist's life--a world most of us won't experience in our lives. That alone is worth endorsing this book, although that's not the half of it.

SAVANNAH, like its characters, is all about feeling.

The writing in this piece of literature flowed brilliantly and captivated my attention enough to where I finished the book in a few long readings. It truly is a love story and the author spent some time studying up on the music industry to be very realistic. Unfortunately, I saw the twist of this book a mile away, so some of the passages that would foreshadow or attempt to bring mystery didn't do it for me. All in all a good read that I would recommend for someone interested in music that is also looking for a loving romance.

We all have fears. Sometimes I think the way we handle them determines how our lives turn out to a large degree. Protagonist Michael Easton’s fear and how he deals with it plays a central role in this book. As a former professional musician, I particularly enjoyed reading of Michael’s struggles since he works in the music industry just like the man who created him.

Martin’ story is complex. It is also presented in a manner that does not confuse the reader.

The author furthermore deserves praise for drawing interesting characters.

It could have been tightened up a bit. It is still a fascinating story written by a strong writer.
I look forward to reading another book by Perry Martin.

“Savannah” is an engaging story of one man’s struggle to understand his deepest fears. Language is a powerful influence on our emotional growth from our earliest years throughout our lives. Words have the power to distort and destroy as well as encourage and heal. Even though it seems he is headed for failure, Michael Easton is a character that we care about. The story moves quickly as we begin to understand why Michael is compelled to make wrong choices for himself and we hope against hope that his spiritual connection will remain strong and guide his way. We are not disappointed with the lovely conclusion. With love all is possible.

This guy just kept messing up his life every time something good was happening. He would drown himself with booze, and so it went thru the entire book. Over and over again. I only kept reading because 5 people gave it 5 stats on Amazon, which I do not understand. I thought it was an awful book.

A very good read. Hard to put down. Sometimes got lost going back and forth to then & now but overall put together nicely. Found myself tensing up from being so drawn into the book.

I thought to give 4 star, but settled on a 5, mostly to counter the two 1-star reviews given which I thought quite unjust for this story. (Yes, the main character has to deal with depression and mental instability; no, you don't have to read it or review it if you can't handle the subject material.) Quite well-written and well-edited, maybe a little overdone on the destructive element, but balanced out with themes of love and friendship. I did like the ending - good to see problems overcome and all's well that ends well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Savannah: You'll love it!

I received my Savannah last week, haven’t finished reading the whole book but I can’t wait to share what I think of this novel. This is fiction but I like how Perry Martin threw in all the real things, that you would think it’s all for real. I was only reading the first few pages when I KNEW I would love to read more. I felt like I lived in the neighbourhood when I read “as-is section of IKEA”, I mean, IKEA alone is like some place we know well, but the writer specifically put "as-is" so you would be directed right to where he wanted you to be, and by the 3rd page I was already craving for cranberry-orange scone that the character ordered, along with a Grande bold at Starbucks, “toast and marmalade” at home and not just “toast and jam”, and I couldn’t help laughing reading this (I think the writer wouldn’t mind me saying as there’s free preview of the book anyway): “Jeff opened and closed his mouth several times but was completely at a loss for words. To Michael he resembled a fish that had just been landed and was lying in the bottom of a boat gasping for oxygen…”. There's not a single picture in the book but the way the story was described made me fall right into the storyboard…. as if I can visualize exactly what the characters looked like, I can hear how they’re screaming. I look forward to reading the rest of the book.
