‘That’s right,’ answered Max. ‘You come over here, you slippery toe-rag.’ In spite of his show of bravado he was really scared and he hoped the snake couldn’t hear his teeth chattering.
‘My plea-sss-ure – you asssked for it,’ hissed the serpent, as it lunged in Max’s direction.
‘Watch out, Max!’ cried Ankharet.
As the snake hurled itself towards him, its fangs bared and dripping with venom, Max jumped out of its way, suddenly realising the grave danger he was in and desperately wishing he’d woken the others up when he’d left the bedroom. Spying a small table near the bed, he took a flying leap, unable to see the large decorative vase made of alabaster which stood on top of it, leaving no room on the surface for him to land.
Ankharet watched the disaster unfolding, her heart in her mouth, knowing that Max was going to fall back on to the floor, right into the path of the waiting serpent. She screwed her eyes tightly shut, awaiting the inevitable crash and subsequent cries of pain that would surely follow. The crash came, as expected, and was deafeningly loud. She heard no scream, however … just a lot of heavy breathing, accompanied by a dull thud.
