He was shocked when, a minute later, his daughter’s voice came on.
“Uh…hello? Is someone there?” she asked suspiciously.
“Elissa!” he said.
“Dad? Really?”
“Yes, it’s me. Most of us are alive and well, and we’ve made good progress. Sorry for the report, but I don’t know how long I’ve got. You should pass on this message to the government. Is Raymond there?”
“You just missed him. Flying lesson.”
“Flying lesson! What class is that for?”
There was a silence.
“Elissa?”
“I should have let him tell you. He didn’t go to university. Pilot training called him.”
“What??” Walsh breathed deeply. “Ok, you’re right I need to talk to him about this. How are you doing?”
“Exams went well as usual. I’m looking forward to graduating! Probably grad school after though, as you expected. At least one of us is predictable.”
“That’s great,” Walsh said. Quick question, do you or Raymond want to inherit my wedding ring, or can I pay for this call with it?”
“Wow,” Elissa said. “I think I’d better say you can pay for the call with it. It looks like you anyway. I’ll want to design my own for my husband, when I find him.”
“Ok, I have to go. I love you. Tell Raymond I love him. He has some explaining to do though.”
“Yeah, I’ll tell him.”
