I decided to start this book by writing about the importance of hiring, developing, and retaining great people. If you want to be successful in any team endeavor, you must have the best people. The most crucial component of a winning organization in any team-oriented activity, whether it be business or sport, is the people.
Hire and Develop
Almost all great leaders agree when it comes to the number one priority of every business.
• Woody Hayes (legendary Ohio State football coach) once said, “You win with people.”
• Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric and perhaps the greatest CEO of the modern era, said that he spent 40 percent of his day on people issues.
• My mentor, John Guffey Jr. (chairman and CEO of Coltec Industries), emphasized to me in our discussions that business success is always about having the best people.
