Later the next day, Margie started gathering some of nature’s treasures for a new creation. She sauntered around the yard and noticed King Tut sunning himself on his favorite side of the wishing well. Mathew and Matilda were out for a swim and Jack was munching on yummy grass. Duchess barked a warning to Doc. There was a bright green truck pulling up in front of the Animal Clinic.
Just as Margie started gathering some fallen leaves, she looked up and saw an intruder climb over the back fence. This intruder was not a blur; it was not fuzzy. She could clearly see that it was a creature she had never seen in the yard previously. Her new glasses were at work. Who was this animal and what was it doing in her yard? It looked like the intruder was wearing a mask over its eyes. Those were not glasses like Margie’s. There was no strap. The intruder had stripes on its tail. What was this creature? It was not a cat like King Tut. It was not a rabbit like Jack. It was not a dog like Duchess. And, it certainly was not a duck like Mathew and Matilda or a bird like Rachel who was suddenly chirping loudly. Margie did not think this intruder was supposed to be in the yard.
Margie took her stand. Not quite the U shape yet. She was not sure what this intruder was going to do. She watched as it walked by the wishing well and looked at King Tut, who instantly became alarmed. King Tut was ready for action. His back arched; he was ready for attack, but the intruder passed by and headed toward the pond.
Was the intruder going to attack Mathew and Matilda while they were swimming? On the edge of the pond, the intruder put a paw into the water. Was the intruder going to have a goldfish lunch? Mathew and Matilda flew up to the edge of the pond and waddled to their nest under the Lilac bush. The intruder continued to play in the water.
Margie started over to the pond to investigate. Where was Duchess in a situation like this? Duchess would have this matter taken care of in one bark. The closer she got to the pond, the more curious she was. Who was this creature? Why was it in her yard?
Margie quietly approached and appeared to be unnoticed by this invader. She took her stand. She arched her back and started her foot-stomping maneuvers. She was ready to give this intruder her Skunk Perfume Special when Duchess arrived on the scene along with his side-kick Jack. Duchess started to bark. The intruder was alarmed. Into the pond it went. The intruder started to swim in an attempt to get away from Duchess. Now King Tut was on the scene and ready for action. Margie and Duchess were on opposite sides of the pond. King Tut and Jack took the other two sides. Was it a stare down or time for an all-out fight?
The intruder was trapped. And then, suddenly it was on Margie’s side of the pond ready to escape. Margie arched, showed her skunk business, and before the intruder knew it, the skunk perfume escaped and found its way to the unwanted guest! Margie’s aim was perfect. Did her glasses help with her aim? She got the intruder in the face. Phew! Doc’s backyard animals were used to this odor, but the intruder was not. This perfume was not welcomed and regardless of the attempts to wipe the smell off, it stayed. The task was accomplished and Doc’s group let the intruder escape.
Doc’s yard family cheered as the intruder headed for the fence. Duchess barked gleefully. King Tut meowed and twirled around and around Margie as if to say, “Thank you!” Jack hopped to the edge of the pond and then onto Duchess. Finally Mathew and Matilda came out of the shelter honking with joy. Thanks to Margie and her new glasses, Doc’s yard was back to normal.
