Tonight, Kim, Chris, and Rica brought over a movie, and we watched it while we ate crazy bread and pizza. I thought of you a lot . . . of all the crazy movies you used to bring home, and the many pizzas we shared—all the memories!
I remember Stone Mountain on the Fourth of July in the rain with your broken umbrella. You looked so funny. And Chuckie Cheese on Kim’s birthday when we played the games together. Or when we all went to the movies—you and Kim, Dad and I—and you picked the movie, which was awful!
I remember the times you and I went to the movies or dinner by ourselves. Remember when that lady called me a cradle robber? She thought we were on a date instead of mother and son. You said it was because I didn’t look old enough to be your mother. Such a charmer!
Remember the time we went to the Thai restaurant, and you loved it? You took your friends back, and they all thought it was gross. You always were wonderfully adventurous.
My memories could fill pages! Remember when you were about eight years old and Lori was about ten? She was apparently really getting on your nerves because you rigged a cup of water underneath the canopy on her bed and when she sat down, the water poured right on her head. She was furious! I was impressed with your ingenuity! And apparently I didn’t hold back my laughter very well because Lori is still a bit indignant when she tells the story.
You brought so much laughter into our lives and apparently into your friends’ lives as well. I’ve heard so many funny stories about you that I might not have known for many years . . . they were rather mischievous stories. Like the bubbles in the hot tub at our house in Dallas. You said you didn’t know how they got there. We know now…about the bottle of shampoo you kids poured in and the mountain of billowy shampoo clouds that erupted from the spa. As your friend Marc told the story, I could see all of you as you formed hats and ears and beards out of the suds. I thought it was hilarious. I don’t know if Dad shared my glee. He was the one who cleaned the tub and filter in the aftermath!
And now we also know about the time that you and Marc got Dad’s truck stuck in the mud right up to the floorboards. You had promised to pick him up at the airport, so he gave you the keys to his four-wheel-drive pickup. Guess the temptation was too great. You and Marc apparently took it off-road to do some four-wheeling and got really stuck. You had to have someone with a winch pull you out and then you apparently used up a lot of quarters in the car wash as you had to clean the mud off—from both the outside and the inside! Marc said you were both scared to death that Dad would ring your necks, but I guess your cleanup job was pretty good because he never suspected. He actually smiled a bit when Marc told the story.
That’s what I miss, most Rob: the laughter that surrounded you. Sure, you had a serious side, but mischief always lurked just below the surface!
