The clean smell of rain infused the morning and drifted into her car on the drive to town. Tufts of flimsy mist rose from the road and clouds deterred the sun. Sam got to the shop, took off her sweater, donned an apron, and fired up the ovens, welcoming the warmth. She finished two batches of brownies and three of the bar cookies and decided to have a cup of tea while they baked. She picked out several glass serving trays for the treats and made a sign inviting guests to help themselves.
She decided to start on one of the pies that required several steps to chill ingredients, planning to refrigerate it overnight and add the finishing fruit in the morning. She gave Linda a call and put in a weekly order for table flowers. Linda was happy to hear from Sam and even offered to get them ready and deliver them in time for the rehearsal.
By the time the cookies and brownies were done a bouquet of rich warm chocolate filled the shop and the chill of the morning was gone. As Sam inhaled she thought the sniff alone was at least a hundred calories. Hayley would be coming in at one today, giving Sam the place to herself for a few hours before Max arrived. She was letting the crust cool and whipping up the cream and marshmallows for the bottom layer of the pie, when she heard the front door chime.
