Most sports have physical boundaries. The goal line. The batter’s box. The end line. The sideline. The baseline. The three-point line. The right field line. The starting line.
I always loved the game of women’s lacrosse exactly because, before the 2006 rule change, there were no hard boundaries. Modeled after the way the American Indians played the game, the women’s game was limited only by soft boundaries such as sloping hills, team benches, and stadium seating.
As a player, it was exhilarating knowing you were not constrained by a line. You were free to run and play hard, to stretch your limits and the limits of those around you.
If you ventured too far off into the soft boundary, the referee would blow the whistle and move the game back toward the center of the field. There was no loss of possession for going out of bounds. You were simply gently reigned back in as the game clock continued to run.
