“I’m pregnant.”
“Oh, my darling.”
“You know what this means to me, Mom.”
“I think I can safely say that I do.” Georgina took the news in with care-
ful joy. It was too big to approach greedily. Kate had even been too shy to
open the conversion with it. “Have you been to a doctor?” Georgina asked,
trying to slow her own excitement down.
“Not yet. I just did the test.”
“Is Finn with you?”
“No, he’s off-island on a mission. He doesn’t know yet. I’ll tell him
tomorrow when he gets back.” Georgina felt a spring open in her heart as
she listened to the joy in her child’s voice. “This baby will be the first blood
relative I’ve ever seen. I’m afraid to be too ecstatic, but I feel like shouting
from the rooftops or skipping down the road. It’s like the sky around me
has expanded and spread out; the air smells sweeter. I want to sing a hymn
to existence.”
“Then do, my sweet-pea girl.”
“Mom, this is the most remarkable moment that I could ever imagine.
I love everyone.”
“A miracle is what it is,” said Georgina with the pure intention of be-
stowing a blessing on the life beginning in Kate.
“Oh, I want to sing this miracle preparing inside me into being.”

“I know, my darling girl. I want to savor your joy, too, and take it in in
tiny butterfly sips to make it last.”
