Georgina glanced away and saw a daddy longlegs climbing up the wall next to their outdoor table. Emma followed her gaze, picked up her heavy white cotton napkin, and whacked the spider.
“Why did you do that?”
“Oh, come on. It was just a spider.”
“It wasn’t just a spider. It was a spider living its life until you ended it. You don’t have to kill things just because they walk into your line of vision. That spider was a sentient being made of the same star stuff as you and me. If you thought of that spider as a little cow, would you have killed it?”
“Spare me your Carl Sagan lecture.”
