Kate looked dead, her body translucent, as Georgina lifted her in her arms and flew to a mountaintop where she laid Kate across her lap. She sat and sewed up her daughter with green thread in all the places where the monster had torn her. Sewing and sewing, she worked, leaving no wound open, especially near her child’s heart. Light began to reenter Kate as Georgina sewed, but it was wobbling around, and Kate’s roots had torn loose.
She was no longer connected to the earth. Georgina grabbed for her own taproot and tore it up the middle, splitting it, and then tied it to Kate, securing her to this world.
