The World Alliance chose to take advantage of an ideal opportunity during the six years following the Asteroid’s impact. It was a chance to rid their unified societies of members that either burdened or offered no service to the System. Convicted criminals, the elderly, the insane… anyone who did not meet their nation’s standards of the ideal citizen was sent to the Island.
There, kept under careful guard, these “undesirables” worked its nutrient-rich land. The Alliance allowed the Allocated to live as they saw fit so long as they posed no threat and continued to produce. This was out of what the Alliance had called an act of altruism, but Trent had long considered it foolishness.
When violence and disorder took root on the Island, none dared cross into its heart. A self-made, foreign language and culture set the Allocated apart from the nations that had first shunned them. It was only a matter of time before the world’s most undesired populace would rally together and demand their Independence.
The Alliance would hear none of it, and the battle ensued. But the people of the Island stood resolute in the heat of bitter conflict. Twenty-three years after the initialization of the Great Banishment, all parties agreed to leave the nation of Artemisia alone. Their Independence was assured, so long as they remained on the Island and stayed out of the affairs of the Allied Nations.
Trent frowned at the memory of these advanced history lessons he had absorbed in school. The Alliance did loose immeasurable wealth by abandoning the Island and bowing to the whims of these renegades. But perhaps the Alliance was not as foolish as he first thought. America had been a mighty and respected player for many decades in the lofty World Alliance. And, America was currently in the elected command of an Artemisian. Perhaps, after so many years of patience, the Alliance would finally gain access to the Island.
If the Alliance was not, in fact, aware of this opportunity, then perhaps it was time for someone to enlighten the Leaders. Trent grinned at this and resumed his search of neuro-space with new vigor. He intended to prove himself a valuable asset to the President and remain by his side, throughout the duration of his term if need be. His imagination soared as it secured his noble role in returning Artemisia to the World Alliance.
