I threw my sunglasses on and headed to the nearest newsstand and purchased Razz Magazine, hating that I was supporting them when they could possibly sabotage my marriage.
Sure enough in the upper right corner of the cover was a photo of my husband walking arm in arm with the slutty Greek bitch! I hurried back to my apartment, furiously flipping pages while in the elevator. I walked through the door just as I saw my two-pages of humiliation. There were photos of Danny leaving Anastasia’s apartment building. There was a photo of them walking together, both with hats and sunglasses on, as if either of them could disguise themselves! She was almost six-feet tall and he was well over it! Plus, her flaming red hair stuck out of her hat giving her away.
I barely got through the first sentence of the article before running into the bathroom. I threw up and cried, but I felt anger more than any other emotion. I was embarrassed by the world knowing my husband was having an affair, and with a model no less!
I did not call Danny. He was actually writing with Jordan that day—not just pretending to. I decided to see Haley. I needed to get out of the penthouse before I destroyed it. As soon as Haley opened the door for me, she knew something was wrong.
“You look pissed,” she said, allowing me to come inside.
“I guess you didn’t see Razz Mag yet.”
“Oh no, what’s in it?” Haley sighed, running a hand through her hair.
The month before, they had posted a photo of Jordan with Meghan, Haley’s friend, having a drink together; meanwhile, Haley was simply in the bathroom.
I pulled the magazine out and showed it to her. She just laughed.
“Remember, don’t believe everything you read,” she rolled her eyes. “Especially in trash like this.”
“I believe it,” I said seriously.
“Cami,” Haley said as I followed her into the living room.
“Things have not been good, Haley,” I said, my eyes becoming watery.
Ugh, I used to be so good at controlling my tears. The older I got, the easier it was for me to show my emotions. Danny used to be the only shoulder I cried on, but as years went on, he became less of a comfort to me. Haley had been the one to wipe my tears more than anyone lately.
Haley grabbed my hand and just then, the door opened. I heard a bunch of male voices. I could pinpoint Jordan and Danny’s voices anywhere, but someone else was with them. He had a voice that sounded a little deep, but still light somehow. To my surprise, it was Andrew Ashton, Jordan’s little brother. They walked down the hallway and entered the living room.
I sometimes forget Andrew isn’t a kid anymore. He is in his late twenties and played major league baseball. His dream of playing for the Yankees came true and Jordan couldn’t be more proud of him. He was almost a spitting image of his brother aside from his paler skin tone, darker eye color and the cutest dimples I had ever seen. I hadn’t seen him in a while, other than watching baseball games on TV, since we all had busy schedules.
“Drew!” Haley yelled, jumping up and giving her brother-in-law a hug.
“Hey Cami,” Andrew walked over to me and I stood, forcing a smile on my face as I avoided eye contact with everyone, especially Danny. “Congratulations on the baby.”
He kissed my cheek and I accidentally looked into his big brown eyes. He smiled at me and I was sure he could tell I was upset. I was trying to hold it together, but it was fairly impossible for me to hide anything was wrong.
“Hey babe,” Danny said, slinging an arm over my shoulders as if he didn’t know about Razz Magazine.
Jordan and Haley were in a kiss. Danny and Drew teased them, but I was jealous. I knew Jordan would never cheat on Haley. I knew Jordan would never say such awful things that Danny had said to me when we fought. Why couldn’t it have been me that Jordan loved like that? Why did I end up with a two-timing jerk of a husband?
When Danny and I got home, he plopped on the couch and turned on the television.
“What’s for dinner?”
That was all it took. I lost it. I pulled the magazine out of my purse and threw it in his lap.
“Ask Anastasia.”
Danny looked up at me and laughed.
“Come on, you don’t believe this, do you?”
I put my hands on my hips.
“You don’t think I’m that stupid, do you?”
“Anastasia and I are friends…”
He didn’t even sound convincing.
“Danny, just stop,” I snarled. “Tell me. This isn’t going away. If you love me at all, you’ll tell me the truth,” I sniffled.
He sighed and moved toward me, taking my hands off my hips and pulling me down onto the couch.
“I’ve been having an affair.”
His blue eyes burned into mine and I wanted to slap him. Instead, I just nodded.
“Just one?”
He just looked down and back up at me. His eyes told a tale of several women.
“Wow…” I said in disbelief. “So, this whole time we’ve been trying to have a baby, you’ve been with how many women?”
“Baby,” Danny said, swallowing.
He only called me “baby” when he was in trouble.
“I’ve been very unhappy.”
My bottom lip trembled, “And you think I’m happy?!?”
I stood up and wouldn’t allow my tears to fall. Danny didn’t deserve to see me cry anymore. He didn’t deserve to see he got to me.
“I’m fucking miserable, but I would never cheat on you, Danny!”
“I’m sorry, okay? Look, no more…” he grabbed my arms. “I love you, Cam and I love our baby. We finally have our family. Don’t ruin it,” he tried to kiss me and I smacked him away.
“You ruined it, asshole!” I yelled before pacing. “You love me?” I snickered. “What’s to love? Anastasia isn’t gaining any baby weight and she has the boobs you wanted me to get,” I sniffled.
“Cami, I was joking about the boob job!” He huffed.
“Right. I looked the other way when you flirted with other girls because we’re both natural flirts, but I can’t look the other way now.”
Danny stared at me, “Why not? I look the other way every time you stare at Jordan.”
I shook my head, “We both love Jordan, don’t you throw him in my face.”
“I don’t love him the way you do, that’s for sure,” Danny said.
“Oh, so you want to turn this into your jealousy over Jordan?” I asked. “Maybe you should have been a loyal husband like he is! I would never make a move on Jordan because I love him and Haley together and I love you!” I smacked his arm. “I want you out of here.”
“Cami, don’t throw us away,” he said, grabbing onto my shirt.
I pushed his hands away.
“I didn’t throw us away. You did.”
“We should never have let us go on this long,” Danny sighed.
I looked back at him. It hurt to hear that, but he was so right.
