Rama picked up the small black book that had been her constant companion since she arrived in Calcutta.
“Minnie, the first Bible I ever had was impossible for me to read.”
“Because it was in English?”
Rama smiled and shook her head. “It was Sanskrit, but not in the script I knew. In my hands I hold the Marathi translation that’s been my companion for twenty years. Missionaries worked hard to translate the Bible into Marathi. They consulted with everyone they could find to make it easily understood. They didn’t realize that these words are for educated people. I’m going to translate the Bible into simple Marathi, the language our Bible women understand and can read.”
