Charles thought the episode might rattle Andrea, but she was proving to be a real trooper. It was dark now, and they knew they were being followed although they couldn’t see their pursuers.
The Everything-except-the-kitchen-sink pizza insured the evening’s goal of fat over-consumption was achieved. The couple chatted while the waiter retrieved a to-go box for the remaining ten-thousand calories worth of uneaten dough, pepperoni and cheese.
“Who do you think it was?” asked Andrea.
“Probably the government,” Charles answered nonchalantly.
“Doesn’t that bother you?”
Charles thought for a moment.
“Yes and no. It concerns me we’ve reached a point in the country when the government can get away harassing law-abiding citizens. It bothers me when they can twist the law and abuse the Freedom of Information Act, and it bothers me the whole damn system is so corrupt and lawless.
“On the other hand, the fact they’re following me confirms I’m onto something they don’t want me to know about. So in a perverse way, that energizes me. The more crap they pull, the more determined I become.”
“Charles, you know how I feel, and we won’t plow that ground again. I’ll just say again I believe you’re dealing with something very dangerous.”
