When Charles opened his eye, Dr. Helton approached the bed.
“Mr. Arrington, you suffered extremely grave injuries. You lost your right arm and your right eye, but you will recover. We’ll keep you in the hospital for another few weeks.”
Charles whispered; it hurt his throat to speak. “What happened?”
Jack said, “It was a bomb, Charles. Someone blew up your car.”
Charles looked a Jack for a few moments and shut his eye.
“He needs to rest,” said Dr. Helton.
Jack, the doctors and the chaplain left the hospital room. The nurse adjusted the intravenous flow, and then she too left.
The shock of Myra’s death and his debilitating injuries was too much to comprehend. Before Charles slipped into unconsciousness he realized it was the book, the goddamn book.
