Outside Guerrero, Mexico
Compared to the six weeks that the terrorists had spent on the Marie Omega, the long trip from Punta Cardon to Guerrero, Mexico, was a joyride. The trip was uneventful; white faces were more common, so the terrorists weren’t forced to remain hidden all the time. The local operatives along the route had selected remote safe houses. The terrorists took breaks to relax, exercise, and rest.
The small convoy reached the staging area outside Guerrero on schedule. The terrorists would have more than two weeks to continue their preparations for the mission. The staging area was secluded, isolated, and fewer than twenty miles from the crossing point. It was a perfect location to refresh their deadly skills.
They spent their days and nights conducting weapons exercises. The team’s arsenal was impressive: Israeli TAR-21 assault rifles, side arms, US-made M67 and MK3A2 hand grenades, and Russian RPGs. The weapons had been pre-positioned in the barn on the grounds of the staging area.
The team also spent hours memorizing the primary and alternative routes they could use once in the United States. Though they were equipped with GPS devices and detailed maps, the team could also navigate from memory if the need arose. The arming procedures for the device were practiced repeatedly.
The time and location for the border crossing were carefully selected. A key to the mission’s success would be an undetected entry into the United States. Contingency plans were in place; and should an encounter occur, quick and decisive action was imperative.
As the day of the crossing approached, Gilchrist, Washington, Compton, and Masterson were as prepared as they could be.
