Both justices were present. Eranti wore his red robes, indicating he was ruling. A woman knelt before him, tears leaving dark brown lines down her smooth tan face. Another woman with a smug look stood to the side holding a baby. The baby cried and reached toward the first woman. Aran took in this scene, and then quickly turned to Naptha.
"Pride of Justice and Protector of Sodom, we may have some trouble coming to the gate that requires your attention."
The high justice glanced at Aran. "What trouble comes that your spear cannot stay?"
Aran hesitated. "It's two men, but unlike men I have ever seen. They are robed in pure white and walk with a storm in their steps."
Naptha looked away, and repeated Aran's first words with a slow sneer, "It's two men."
Aran felt the words like a slap. His thoughts roamed for better words to convey the fear he felt, but everything came back to the fact that he'd seen two men. He turned and walked away slowly. He wanted Naptha to call him back, to ask for more detail. No such call would happen.
