A volunteer asked to sit next to him and said enthusiastically, “Hi. I’m Roger. What’s your name?”
“Alex.”
“Hi, Alex. This facility doesn’t provide a place to sleep but does offer other helpful resources. Do you need any warm clothes or blankets? Can I help you with anything?” Roger asked.
The question seemed to linger like a hot-air balloon on a calm summer day. Then it hit Alex. I am homeless and in a soup kitchen, looking for warm blankets. He had it good back home and really hurt the people who loved him the most.
Alex looked over at Roger. “Do you know how much I would love to wash dishes right now?”
Roger was confused by the question but glanced at the kitchen area and said, “I’m sure the folks here would find something here for you to wash if you really want to.”
Alex replied, “No, not here. At my family’s restaurant.”
