Cain struggled to his feet, gasping for breath. His heart racing, his arm numb, and his
body bathed in sweat, he staggered to the door. Reaching for the ladle, he dipped it in the
bucket for a drink. But before it ever touched his lips, the ladle fell to the ground as he
suddenly grabbed at his chest. I am dying!
Sinking to his knees, he grabbed a post and held on. Looking up to heaven, he shook his
right hand angrily.
“You expect this to make me worship You? Never! I die, but –”
His voice broke as he clutched his heart and toppled over. He was dead before his head
hit the ground.
There was no answer from heaven as the sun rose higher in the sky and the gentle breeze
continued. All the animals of the forest continued their daily activities. Except for circling
vultures, the world continued as though he had never been there.
