Jorja’s alarm sounded at exactly 5:30am. Not that she needed it this particular morning; she had spent a rather restless night. Between the bruises on her arm and leg, and her ankle, not to mention a really overactive mind, sleep had been hard to come by.
Not only had she contemplated her weekend with Regina, she hadn’t been able to shake some of the things Max had said during their brief conversation. And she still had this niggling issue with his reference to the NSA and their spying on the American public. There was something, something, she had seen…something that didn’t really make any sense at the time…but now she just couldn’t seem to recapture the details from several years and computers screens ago.
How can life just turn completely upside down, without you even realizing its coming? Doesn’t this ever stop? When do I just get to retire, relax and forget about the military, the DOD, friendship issues and just sit on the porch, drink coffee and read? When?
Thinking of coffee, she got up to go pop a pod in her coffee maker. She did so love her little coffee maker. One cup at a time, any kind you wanted. There were some aspects of progress that Jorja really loved. Her individual cup of coffee was one.
As it brewed, she got her cigarettes and her phone and waited for the last ‘plop’ of coffee to drop into her cup. Now, to the back porch and her daily appointment book. Time to think about the responsibilities of Monday.
Just as she picked up the phone to call her mom, she saw that she had a voicemail.
Mmmm..that wasn’t there last night…
She pressed the button to retrieve her voice messages, and was startled to hear Paul Collections’ voice on the other end.
How strange that he should pick this weekend to call.
“Jorja, this is Paul…I really meant to be back home before the summer, but it doesn’t look like I’ll be finished here…umm...I guess I just wanted to give you a call, make sure everything was working out with the cabin…and…uh…well, just give me a shout if you need anything, my number is 870-555-1313, I think I sent it in an email…but just in case…anyway just give me a call if you need anything. Talk with you soon.”
Well, just when you thought it couldn’t get any more complicated.
Now, exactly why did he call?
