THE NEXT MORNING, Anika leads me past a series of tall windows on the school's top floor. Beyond the massive stonewall is The Harrow, although I secretly call it Dinosaur Forest.
From this vantage, it is even more impressive. Trees with bark and leaves like I’ve never seen crowd the landscape. The giant trees have massive leaves bigger than the comforter on my parents’ king-sized bed. Ferns soar taller than the school building. It looks prehistoric. Nothing lives there anymore, I’ve learned… nothing except the trees. So why does everyone say it’s so dangerous? Anika pauses in front of a nondescript door, then opens it.
Inside is a small dorm with two narrow beds, two wooden desks, and a rickety bedside table beside each. It feels somewhat prison-like but all things considered, it’s okay.
“Unpack while it’s still light. Those candles will be your only source of illumination after dark. Donna will be your roommate.”
