Darius looked up at the sky or at least stared at the ceiling as if trying to plead with a God he didn’t even know if he believed in. Usually, he would have said he didn’t. He breathed heavily and rubbed his cool hands, still damp from the sink, down his face again and then patted himself dry with a nearby hand towel.
“Darius, come on, it’s really not polite to keep me waiting.” Allison’s voice lilted from the window on the patio door.
Darius breathed heavily inside and didn’t respond. His mind was deep in thought. He strolled into the sitting room where he often did his reading and research, right next to the patio door. He had spent hours with Henry at his feet there, pouring over research papers or sometimes just a good book. The artifacts he had collected from around the world were mounted on the walls and above the mantle of the fireplace. He breathed heavily, sighed again looking around at all the things he’d accumulated, deep in thought. He took it all in. He looked at each and every object, remembering where he’d gotten them from, how he’d obtained them, the work he’d done, the discoveries he’d made. He thought of the achievements that had brought him accolades and recognition, papers published, the entire sum of his life and career. The passion that he had pursued since he’d been a very young man, the burning interest he’d always had in his heart to understand other cultures and time periods. He looked around at all his accomplishments; he absorbed and breathed them in and thought about the situation he was in.
