Eventually, she announced that she had to go. She wrote her number on a purple sticky note and handed it to me. I thanked her, and our eyes wandered around each other, nervously looking for a proper spot to rest. I couldn’t keep my gaze from sliding back and forth across her face, trying to take in her every feature. She was a new, vibrant color in what I had thought was a monochrome world.
I leaned forward and kissed her cheek. It felt warm and soft against my lips. I hadn’t planned on doing it; it just happened. Her hand touched my face for the briefest of moments until I pulled away.
I looked at her, feeling as though I’d been struck by a jolt of electricity. Something had changed in her eyes. They appeared more precious than before. More vulnerable. She pursed her lips and closed the short space between us by giving me a strong, heartfelt hug. My heart fluttered against my ribs as it tried to get closer to her.
